Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World

Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.

I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've

gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling

hopeful about the future .

6th April - Caroline Lucas comes to the rescue!

Just as I was feeling depressed that it might be a waste giving any time or energy to mainstream politics, and that our so-called democratic Parlimentary system just isn't 'fit for purpose', along comes an interview with Caroline Lucas (UK's first Green MP) in the Guardian on Saturday explaining why she sees her role as an MP as very important.
She faces the mountain we have to climb to bring about the changes needed to combat climate change, with positivity and cheerfulness and determination.  She has no room for despair and powerlessness.
What was it about the interview which made me feel more hopeful that Green representation in government is important?  When asked 'After four years in parliament do you feel more or less optimistic that politicians will do what is necessary to combat climate change' she replied -
"I suppose I get a sense that we can build coalitions and that with enough political will things can change." and
"It's so important that the Greens have a place.  We've had much more coverage (since she's been an MP), it's been an amplified.  I can take a position that helps shift the other parties.  I see my role very much as being there to hold their feet to the fire.  It feels important, and that matters."
I can now happily get on with helping (in my small way) Rupert Read win in Eastern England in the Euro elections.
