Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World

Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.

I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've

gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling

hopeful about the future .

11th April - I Don't Believe It!!!

But, of course, I do believe it. According to Caroline Lucas in her interview in the Guardian on Saturday, the only explanation  for the government's actions in no way reflecting their rhetoric ('The greenest government ever') is that vested interests outside of government have the power to determine policy.  At a time when the International Panel on Climate Change published a report (yet again) which clearly spells out that the effects of climate change will be pretty disastrous, the government seems hell bent on reducing wind farms and increasing our use of fossil fuels. How does Caroline Lucas explain it?

"The only answer I have is that the fossil fuel companies have a direct line to government.   More than 50 energy company employees have been seconded to the government free of charge, and dozens of them to the department of energy and climate change. They're not doing that out of the goodness of their hearts. They're doing it because they want to shape the kind of policy that comes out of it – and frankly they're doing a rather good job. I cannot come up with another answer for why government would look evidence in the face and turn its back on it."

Oh, well, I'm going to get on with the gardening ...

  1. Hi Eileen,

This is a follow up to an earlier comment regarding the Re-Set. The 20 min video interview with Ray Savage of The Re-Set that I watched about a month ago is now available and it clearly describes what it is about and what its goals are.

for someone with an activists heart such as yourself, I hope you manage to give it your attention as it truly is inspiring of the change we want to see.
