Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World

Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.

I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've

gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling

hopeful about the future .

MAy 26th - It seems that capitalism's really not good for us

I've found that for many thinkers and writers global capitalism is seriously not good for us.  No apologies for going over old ground again ...  it leads to inequality with mental distress for both the 'haves' and the 'have nots' and social unrest for communities, environmental and planetary destruction and degradation and the extinction of many human cultures and animal species. Not good news hey?!
A quick 'Google' came up with many international writers who gave the thumbs down to global capitalism 21st Century style -
Jakob Augstein writing in Spiegel International in 2012:  Germans see the US election as a battle between the good Obama and the evil Romney. But this is a mistake. Regardless of who wins the election ,, total capitalism is America's true ruler, and it has the power to destroy the country.'
The US news website Examiner in Sept 2010:  Capitalism is actually a revolutionary economic and political philosophy that in its current virulent Global Free Market form will destroy Democracy.
But I'd give the gold star to Noam Chomsky. Whenever I've a few minutes to spare or feel unsure of where my search for simple answers is going I click his name on http://www.brainyquote.com and come up with gems such as:
'The public is not to see where power lies, how it shapes policy, and for what ends. Rather, people are to hate and fear one another'
'In the US, there is basically one party - the business party.  It has two factions, called Democrats and Republicans, which are somewhat different but carry out variations on the same policies.  By and large, I am opposed to those policies. As is most of the population.'
But I have to start from where we are at, so my big question is still how can we regain our power and change direction?
