Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World

Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.

I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've

gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling

hopeful about the future .

May 12th - Isn't health care a pretty basic need?

Looking at problems from my corner of the UK, health care isn't top of the list, but it could become so.  With capital desperate for investment opportunities and a Tory-led government, anything is possible. There are signs that privatisation is hovering in the wings. We are constantly fed stories about the shortcomings of the NHS (preparing us for privatisation?) and I recently discovered that many treatments are no longer provided by the NHS but are bought in from private medical companies.
Will privatisation make things better?  When I looked at health provision in the US I found that the majority of the population have private insurance from their employer but close on 50m have no health insurance and therefore have no treatment. Harvard Medical Research centre reports that around 45,000 people die each year in the US through lack of health care.
A friend recently admitted to hospital in a non-EU country outside the UK said that before every treatment she was asked how she was going to pay.
While privatisation of health provision would be very good for capital investment and for those who can pay vast sums for health care, it wouldn't be so good for the rest of us.
