Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World

Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.

I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've

gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling

hopeful about the future .

May 13th - Buy, buy, buy and all will be well!

Just want to remind myself about the problems we are facing in our world:  The natural environment is being destroyed  -  Climate change  -  Pollution of land, air and sea  -  Population explosion -  Inequality within and between countries  - social unrest and wars  -  depletion of natural resources.  That’ll do for now!!
To test out my idea that free-market unregulated industrial capitalism with its foundations in material consumption is the baddy which is leading us down the wrong road I’ve been trying to find out just what it is about FMUIC (nice shorthand!) that is so bad for us.   I’m beginning with capital’s insatiable appetite for new avenues for investment.  New investment opportunities are dependent on us buying into - excuse the pun! -  the idea that to have the good life we need to adopt the life-style which is fed to us daily not only through the media but by the messages we receive throughout our social world  …  how we should look, how our homes should look, where we should holiday and the rest.
If we work hard and shop hard all will be well and we'll have made it!
Next I’m going to look at the problems this brings with it …
