Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World

Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.

I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've

gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling

hopeful about the future .

20th November - Profit Reigns Supreme!

Lying in bed listening to Today the morning after UKIP won its second by-election it was interesting to hear Danny Alexander's explanation of why voters are looking for an alternative to the main parties. His explanation:  People have become disenchanted with the political system.  His solution:  Get out on to the streets, into communities and on to door steps to explain that Labour cares about the lives of ordinary people and offers an viable alternative.  I reckon that to see the political system at fault is simplistic.  The root of our troubles is that politcians are the puppets of those who hold real power,  globalised corporations hand in hand with media magnates.  Every decision made by our so-called democratically-elected government has to meet the needs of the those who have the most to gain financially.  The well-being of the population takes very much a second place.
So, the free movement of workers across the EU is dictated by the employers' need to get the cheapest possible labour:
Forget the fact that people are uprooted from their homes and land up in an often unwelcoming country
Forget the fact that people in the host nation feel insecure and threatened when they find themselves surrounded by people they don't understand
Forget the fact that the country from which the workers migrate have lost their most skilled and enterprising people
Forget the fact that the living and working standards of the host nation are undermined when workers used to a much lower standard of living take the jobs for less money
Whether we look at housing, health, education or the simple provision of a postal service, the notion of human well-being takes very much a back seat.  Profit reigns supreme!
