I’m on a steep learning curve. Because the world seems to have gone mad, I’m searching for answers to some difficult questions: ‘What's gone wrong in our world?’ and ‘What can we do to bring us to a better future?’ My search has brought some surprises - some of which seem more like secrets - but it has taken me to a place of hope. An increasing number of people have a vision of a better world and are coming together to find a way to get us there. I’m beginning to feel uplifted!
Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World
Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.
I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've
gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling
hopeful about the future .
15th September - Can't Escape the Scottish Referendum
For all the information the media has been smothering us with the question which hasn't been answered is: As an independent nation would Scotland be better able to take back true democracy from the multi-national companies and international money which currently run the show? Would a Scottish government be any more immune from the financial bribes, the massive lobbying power of vested interests, the threats to withdraw capital?
Democracy isn't about whether the government is in London or Edinburgh. It is about those tentacles of the economic system, in which our political and social systems have become entrapped, which determine our everyday lives. Want affordable housing - no, because developers make more money out of selling larger houses; want a high street with small independent shops - no because multi-nationals have the money to put them out of business; want a NHS - no because there's loads a money to be made out of health provision.
So, the question of Scotland remains: Will an independent Scotland be in a better position to resist these pressures? More open to proper, real, authentic democracy? Answers in simple terms please!
