Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World

Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.

I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've

gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling

hopeful about the future .

26th March - Another Brick in the Mad House Wall!

Since I came to see the world as a mad house, I continually come across new bricks to add to the wall of this planetary looney bin.  Here's today's:
The very day I heard that money spent on services for teenagers in England had fallen by 36% in the last two years, the director of an NHS centre for treating adults with gambling addictions called for similar centres for children. The link between alcoholism and gambling among children has been well recorded so we have a generation of young people growing up in a world where their youth clubs (and public swimming pools)  are closing down so that, in their leisure-time, they resort to drinking and gambling. Not everyone can afford a private gym.  Of course this isn't surprising. In the mad house, those in power can more or less do as they please. They close down anything which isn't making money and throw our children to mercy of the market place which is just waiting to ply them with alcohol and games machines.
And when you are living in a mad house, how can you believe anything you are told?  Zoe Williams reported in today's Guardian that the evidence behind Monday's BBC Panorama programme about massive fraud in the NHS is based on very dodgy evidence. We were treated to examples of staff selling NHS dressings etc on E Bay and bent dentists charging for treatment they hadn't given but she could find nothing to back up the figure of £5bn lost to the taxpayer.  Another bad news story designed to help us to fall out of love with the NHS?
I'm just off to renew my subscription to The Guardian ...
