Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World

Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.

I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've

gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling

hopeful about the future .

17th February - The ugly stuff will keep coming along

Can't believe I've restrained myself from moaning on about the state of the world for almost a month!  But things have just got too much for me so here I go with my latest rants ...
The NHS is now setting up a data base with all our medical information which will be up for sale to private companies.  Pharmaceuticals and health providers will be only too happy to hand over cash to get their hands on data which they can use to their own advantage.  Of course HM government will claim the aim is improve the NHS but (as always) I'm suspicious there is a hidden agenda.
And then there is housing ... all those houses being bought up by people wanting to keep them empty to wait around for a quick profit.  And while I'm on the subject of housing, I've not heard much about the impact of an ageing population on housing.  Figures show that a huge number of single folk are living in multi-bedroomed houses, but it would be interesting to know just how many of those are older people living in their family homes who would dearly love to downsize into somewhere easier to maintain and cheaper to heat. That would release family homes for families.  (Not suggesting, of course, we bully older folk to move, but, if they would like to we should make smaller accommodation available and give emotional and practical support to manage the often daunting task of a house move).
I feel better now I've got that off my chest ... back to my search for the good stuff ...

  1. Eileen, you probably think that money is the root of all evil. It's true that it seems to be at the heart of most of today's problems. As you are searching for the good stuff, you may want to take a look at positivemoney.org.
They are an organisation working to reform the monetary system, to create an economy, that works for people, not for Banks. It's a little bit radical, hope you'll find it interesting.....Regards, Colin

  3. Thanks for that Colin, I'll certainly look up positivemoney.org. Also on my 'to watch' list is a video called 'Capitalism Hits the Fan' which someone recently sent to me and the speaker, in the preview, said that money isn't at the centre of the current crisis in capitalism. My guess is that he'll be making the point that capitalism, which depends on growth for its survival, just isn't sustainable in a physically finite planet. Seems so obvious really ...
