I’m on a steep learning curve. Because the world seems to have gone mad, I’m searching for answers to some difficult questions: ‘What's gone wrong in our world?’ and ‘What can we do to bring us to a better future?’ My search has brought some surprises - some of which seem more like secrets - but it has taken me to a place of hope. An increasing number of people have a vision of a better world and are coming together to find a way to get us there. I’m beginning to feel uplifted!
Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World
Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.
I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've
gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling
hopeful about the future .
5th January - A mishmash of good and bad news stories
Once I saw that neoliberal capitalism, which depends on growth, material consumption and profits above all else, is at the root of our problems, things began to fall into place ...
A letter in the Guardian lamenting the decline of carol singers and penny-for-the-Guy and the rise of trick-or-treating', asked 'Is it the pagans or the US who have influenced this cultural shift?' You can't sell stuff to carollers and dear old Guy Fawkes is adorned in makeshift gear, but what a lot of money is made from trick-or-treat outfits (I know it can be fun!)
The misery of those on Housing Benefit who are made homeless when private landlords refuse to let to those on benefits ... what better investment for the rich in times of recession than buy-to-rent? The latest landlord making benefit claimants homeless rents out nearly 1,000 homes in Kent.
Still, a good antidote to the daily gloom and doom stories is reading the Transition Free Press. What good news that in villages across the UK, neighbours are banding together to fight fracking threats, that across the US grass-roots groups are taking control of their communities and their lives and that in Bangladesh a new solar panel is installed every 90 seconds
Yep, there's lots of good stuff happening out there. It's not blazened across the headlines every day. But its well-worth looking for and its helping me to move hopefully into 2014
Positive News is also good for good news
ReplyDeleteYes Chris I do subscribe to that and always get a lift from reading it.
