Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World

Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.

I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've

gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling

hopeful about the future .

1st December - I've Had a 'Eureka' Moment!

In my search for a simple answer to my question 'What can we do to change direction', a visitor to my blog has come up with a very simple answer:  There isn't just one thing we can do, there are lots!
My thanks for introducing me to the book 'One NO, Many YESES' by Paul Kingsnorth.  It is a MUST READ.  How come it was published 10 years ago and I've only just heard of it!!! (I'm trying to get out of the ! habit, but I reckon that deserves 3 !'s)
Put simply (I always try to keep things simple) the book explains that in order to build a better future we must say 'No' to neo-liberal free-market industrial capitalism based on material consumption (for shorthand 'the system') but that there are many ways we can move to a better future.
Silly me!  I was caught up in the 'globalised' mind set which sees one-size-fits all and, of course, that is not the case.  A way of organizing society for the benefit of the majority of people and with due respect to other creatures and to the natural environment, will vary from area to area. How uplifting it is to read Paul Kingsworth's account of the various groups throughout our world who are working towards a better future.  Have only just started reading it but I feel better already.  Must get back to it now ...
