I’m on a steep learning curve. Because the world seems to have gone mad, I’m searching for answers to some difficult questions: ‘What's gone wrong in our world?’ and ‘What can we do to bring us to a better future?’ My search has brought some surprises - some of which seem more like secrets - but it has taken me to a place of hope. An increasing number of people have a vision of a better world and are coming together to find a way to get us there. I’m beginning to feel uplifted!
Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World
Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.
I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've
gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling
hopeful about the future .
November 16th - Material Wealth is not Enough
I'm thinking that to sustain itself capitalism has certain needs and that, if met, those needs might well get in the way of human 'flourishing' or 'prospering'.
Tim Jackson (Prosperity Without Growth) challenges the conventional idea that economic growth will increase well-being and lead to prosperity for all. He asserts that we need a broader definition of 'prosperity' which includes far more than having our material needs for food, shelter, clothes, etc met. He says 'Prosperity has vital social and psychological dimensions. To do well is in part about the ability to give and receive love, to enjoy the respect of your peers, to contribute useful work and to have a sense of belonging and trust in the community. In short, an important component of prosperity is the ability to participate freely in the life of society.'
I reckon though that we don't need academics to spell out to us that our 'well-being' depends on far more than material possessions. It seems to make sense to me and I'm going to keep that in mind as I look at the way capitalism has developed over the past 200 years and the impact that has had on people's feelings of 'well-being'.

ReplyDeleteSeems to me if you're reading David Harvey, you're getting some kind of understanding of how capitalism is ####ing up the planet.
Could also try this which has been posted a couple times already on this site (Media Lens):

Thanks for that John. Great to know someone out there is reading me and sending feedback. I need all the help I can get and its a great comfort to know just how many people are getting tuned into what is going on. It prevents me from losing hope and keeps me from being depressed!
