Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World

Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.

I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've

gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling

hopeful about the future .

Aug 1st - But How Do We Get There From Here?

When I started this blog back in March I set myself the task of seeing whether I could find simple answers to the questions 'What's wrong in our world?' and 'What can we do do change direction?'  I think I've found what seems to be a reasonably simple explanation for what is wrong in our world:
We have an economic system (industrial consumer capitalism) which depends for its survival on growth, which is supported by the political and social institutions of countries it 'helps' to 'develop' and which, as it spreads across the planet, imposes a globalised culture of consumerism which destroys the way of life and cultural traditions of the countries to whom it promises a better way of life free from poverty.
There is no doubt that the juggernaut of industrial capitalism carries with it many of the 'goodies' of modern scientific and technological knowledge but many are now questioning the price which is being paid:
Millions of people are leaving their homes often crossing oceans to meet the demand for labour
Increasing inequalities within nations are leading to social unrest
Resource shortages are leading to international wars
Even those who 'have it all' are finding that a life based on materialism is shallow
Material consumption at the levels 'enjoyed' by the developed nations cannot be sustained across the entire population of the world because of the shortage of natural resources and the damage caused by carbon emissions
Etc ... etc ... etc ...
Although that seems reasonably simple to me,  finding an answer to 'What can we do to change direction?' seems far more difficult.  I suspect that is because huge global companies now have more power than both national governments and even international coalitions so capitalism is calling the tune and we are all dancing to it. What can we do about that?

  2. The answer may lie in creating our own money. As former US President Thomas Jefferson said "Give me control of a country's currency, and I care not who makes its laws". Places around the UK are already doing this, starting with Totnes, then Stroud, Lewes, Brixton, and now the biggest of all, the city of Bristol.
