Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World

Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.

I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've

gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling

hopeful about the future .

July 11th - Let's all flourish and prosper together

I'm now beginning to wonder just what a system would look like which gave priority to meeting the true needs of humanity and the other creatures with whom we share the planet and would be sustainable and not mess up the planet for future generations.
Tim Jackson produces a neat summary of what we might be aiming for by using two lovely words: Flourish and Prosper.  Of course the basics of life must be provided for: food and water, shelter, security and clothing.  But what else do we need in order to 'flourish' and 'prosper'?
I've been trying to put my finger on exactly what 'flourishing' and 'prospering' involve and for this Tim Jackson quotes from Amartya Sen's 'The Living Standard' which was published in 1984.  After our basic material needs are met ... ' Physical and mental health matter. Educational and democratic entitlements count too. Trust, security and a sense of community are vital to social well-being.Relationships, meaningful employment and the ability to participate in the life of society appear to be important almost everywhere.  People suffer physically and mentally when these things are absent. Society itself is threatened when they decline.'
So there we have it - working so hard to buy 'stuff' leaves little time for relationships and often impacts on our physical and mental health, our sense of community is diminished when individualism and competition takes precedence over co-operation and our ability to participate in society is diminished when, in an unequal society, we struggle to keep ahead of the game or feel we are at the bottom of the heap.
That still leaves me wondering however we can move to a system where everyone can prosper and flourish in a sustainable world.
