Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World

Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.

I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've

gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling

hopeful about the future .

May 22nd - What's To Be Done?

Tax evasion by huge companies brings me to the second part of my quest for simple answers: 'What can we do to change direction?'    Tax evasion seems to show that  international companies wield massive power and have, many think, taken over power from national governments or even from trading groups such as the EU.  Time and again legislation has been scuppered by lobbying industry when a government has tried to implement the wishes of the people.  Examples abound ... planning laws in the UK changed to suit the demands of developers ... chemical banning legislation abandoned or watered down in the EU ...  universal health provision made impossible in the USA in spite of Barrack Obama's best efforts ...  and the rest.   Must be loads more.  Industry doesn't make massive contributions to political parties unless they expect a pay back. And companies have long been able to threaten to move overseas if they feel threatened by government proposals. As far back as the 70's  Harold Wilson claimed that the 'Gnomes of Zurich' (Swiss banks) put a stop to much of  the legislation planned by the Labour government.
I'm going to try to find out how thinkers and writers tackle the question of 'What can we do to change direction' by looking at what we can do at a personal level and how we can challenge the massive power of international capital.  No small task.  I hope I'll get some helpful comments from anyone out there who has the time/interest.
