I’m on a steep learning curve. Because the world seems to have gone mad, I’m searching for answers to some difficult questions: ‘What's gone wrong in our world?’ and ‘What can we do to bring us to a better future?’ My search has brought some surprises - some of which seem more like secrets - but it has taken me to a place of hope. An increasing number of people have a vision of a better world and are coming together to find a way to get us there. I’m beginning to feel uplifted!
Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World
Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.
I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've
gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling
hopeful about the future .
April 18th - Looks like free market capitalism might be the problem
Having spent some months thinking about how capitalism has evolved and spread I'm coming round to the idea that while unregulated market forces might be good at harnessing enterprise and creativity and producing all the goods which go to make a wealthy material lifestyle (for some) it falls short when it comes to meeting our wider needs for a general sense of well being. And then, within the limits of a physically finite planet, it will never be able to bring the world's burgeoning population up to the physical lifestyle of those who live in the 'developed' countries.
I'm thinking I might go back to getting clear in my mind the needs of free-market capitalism and see why - as I suspect - they sit uncomfortably with our human needs.
Then I'll look at what is being said by various writers about how we can move forward to a way of life which is more likely to meet the broader needs of all Mankind and which doesn't destroy the natural world on which our very lives depend
Taking myself off on a short holiday now so no more posts for a few days ...
