Secrets and Hope in Our Mad World

Early in 2017 I read George Marshall’s book ‘Don’t Even Think About It: Why We are Wired Not to Think About Climate Change’ and I decided I would think about it. And I would read about it. Then I would write about it.

I write as a 'non-expert' and I'm hoping that your comments will help me to see whether the insights I've

gained make sense, whether the conclusions stack up and whether it's realistic for me to start feeling

hopeful about the future .

March 14th - Things they are a changing

So, I’ve looked at some of my worries – but what now?   Interesting?  Challenging?  Worrying?  Terrifying?  I’ve decided my best starting point is to consider the Earth’s plight as ‘interesting’ and ‘challenging’ rather that ‘frightening’ or ‘terrifying’.  This gives me hope – not the close your eyes and cross your fingers sort of hope, but hope which empowers, inspires and concentrates the mind into directing a course of action
Humans are endowed with incredible resilience and creativity and in spite of the power of the huge companies spreading across the world, often surpassing the power of democratically elected governments, wonderful action and change are what is happening.
This action and change is too slow and too late for many people, but whatever form it takes its central message is that ‘Something is wrong – humanity is heading in the wrong direction and we need to change our ways.’  The message is conveyed through many actions …
People who see that the world-wide village is a mirage are putting into action localisation plans to get to know their neighbours and the local community
People who see the massive unjust inequalities which result from our economic system are protesting and have set up OCCUPY camps of tents in towns and cities throughout the world
People who recognise that change can come about on a very personal level with small ‘random acts of kindness’ have initiated new ways of relating through free economy communities such as www.justfortheloveofit.org.

That’s all for now … but I’m finding more good news every day!
